I use the metaphor of surfing the urge in my work with eating disorder clients. This is because when the urge first hits, it can feel like the feeling will keep getting more and more intense until you give in. Learning to watch the urge, without acting on it, can help you see that what goes up, must come down! All urges have a begining, middle and end and with practice you can ride out the wave.
This is one of the most highly rated handouts I use in my practice. It's a firm favorite with my clients! It is a huge collection of practical suugestions of ways to ride out the wave. There are 101 different activities that people with eating disorders have used themselves to help them distract and manage the urges to binge eat.

I'm a Cognitive Behaviour Therapist, or CBT for short! I've worked in an NHS Community Eating Disorders Service since 2010 both in Hertfordshore and in Essex. I am really passionate about working with eating disorders.
What I have noticed since 2020, is that eating disorder services are increasingly becoming overwhelmed with the number of referrals having increased significantly. This led to some tough decisions being made which has seen services place restrictions on who they will accept for assessment and treatment. This has meant that thresholds are high and there is a gap in provision for the majority of eating disorders.
I am concerned about everyone who have eating disorders who are encouraged to wait for their illness to worsen before being placed on a long waiting list for therapy. I believe that if treatment can be accessed early, this means eating disorders don't have to deterioate. The evidence backs me up on this one as well, early treatment is much better all around.
This toolkit is the first step in trying to provide support more easily for people who have been denided treatment. I hope to provide more in the future so follow me on social media or sign up for my news letter on the website to be the first to hear about future developments!
